Welcome to the East Midlands Region.
We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire and welcome any ASLI member who lives and works in this area.We currently meet at Nottinghamshire Deaf Society every two months. Our meetings usually incorporate a training session so you can accumulate CPD points by attending. To give as many members a chance to come as possible we try and rotate the day of the week when we meet and we are also happy to rotate locations – we go with members’ preferences as far as practicable. You can access meetings remotely (if you give us advanced warning of this preference) as we are able to use GoTo, which means you can attend from the comfort of your own home or office.During the meetings we usually spend about 30-45 minutes providing information about what is happening within ASLI, in our region, and raising or discussing any relevant interpreting issues. We then spend the remainder of the session doing a training session. They are sometimes led by a regional member but sometimes by a guest trainer/speaker. We are a very active region with a diverse range of skills and experience and we find that our meetings are a great way of us getting together, supporting each other and sharing knowledge.Apart from our bi-monthly sessions, we organise free, or heavily discounted, half-day and one-day training workshops on occasional Saturdays. The courses are on topics chosen by members so please have your say if there is something you would like us to provide. We have an East Midlands’ discussion forum. Members can access the forum by logging on to the Members’ Area of the ASLI website and set their notifications to match their preferences. We are always keen to welcome new members and any interpreter can attend a meeting, as a one-off, as a visitor. We are a very supportive group and are keen to provide advice and information to local interpreters, as well as our deaf and hearing clients. We liaise with local organisations and try to be as up to date as we can about issues affecting interpreters and the Deaf Community. If you are new to the area, please get in touch, it would be great to hear from you and hopefully we will see you at our next meeting. Please contact the Regional Contact, Jill Henshaw, for further information by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
